Bowling Changes See Sakib Mahmood and Luke Wood Replace Archer for India Opener

England have tweaked their pace attack for the upcoming T20 showdown with India, introducing Sakib Mahmood and Luke Wood into the lineup. The moves come after the fast bowler Josiah Archer was ruled out, a decision confirmed by England's coaching staff.

Mahmood, who impressed in domestic competitions, steps in for Jamie Overton, while Wood fills the void left by Archer. Both bowlers bring fresh energy and the ability to swing the ball at speed, qualities that England hope will trouble India's top order.

The changes follow England's disappointing exit from the 2026 T20 World Cup semi‑final, where they fell to India. Coach Matthew Mott indicated that the adjustments aim to restore balance to the side and enhance its competitiveness in all three formats.

In addition to the new bowlers, the appointed XI includes Phil Salt, Jos Buttler, Harry Brook (captain), Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton, Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Liam Dawson, Adil Rashid and Luke Wood. The squad will open the series at Chester‑le‑Street on Wednesday.
