Saina Nehwal urges continued support for Indian athletes ahead of Olympics

Speaking at the Sanand Sports Festival, Saina Nehwal stressed that India’s sporting future hinges on steady investment. She applauded the presence of budding athletes training for state and national championships, believing many will soon represent the country on the world stage.

"Funding is the backbone of performance," Nehwal declared. "When we have the right sponsorships, we can sustain high‑level preparation, stay among the top contenders, and bring home medals. Money matters, and with it, our athletes can enjoy longer, more successful careers."

Nehwal also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s habit of honouring medalists and encouraging players before major tournaments. She called for an expansion of leagues, allowing athletes who finance their own participation to receive additional backing.

The champion’s message was clear: without continuous financial backing, India cannot maintain its upward trajectory in global sports.
