SA20 Fifth Season Auction Highlights South African Stars and Global T20 Talents

Johannesburg – The SA20 franchise league is preparing for its fifth‑season player auction on 7 October, where 19 remaining roster spots will be filled. Out of an initial 789 registrations, the pool has been trimmed to 156 candidates, split between 95 South African cricketers and 61 overseas players.

Compared with the previous year, the auction will be more compact because most franchises have locked in their core line‑ups. The Durban Super Giants and Paarl Royals have already assembled 19‑member squads and will sit out this auction cycle. A collective budget cap of $2.11 million forces teams like Joburg Super Kings and MI Cape Town to allocate six positions each while staying within the limit.

Key South African figures attracting attention are former JSE skipper Faf du Plessis, all‑rounder Vincent Moulder, quick bowler Naseem Burger and experienced top‑order batsman Rassie van der Dussen. Du Plessis continues to be a prized asset, having recently topped the European run‑scoring tables.

The two under‑23 slots are set to trigger a bidding war. Matthew Boost, the Season 2 record‑breaker, is a top prospect, alongside former SA U‑19 captain Jason Rolls. The overseas roster includes big‑name specialists such as Kieron Pollard, Trent Bolt, Shamarh Hatemir, Mohammad Nabi, AM Gazi, Jordan Cox, Enyinnur Donald, Rehan Ahmed and Richard Gleeson.

Players already attached to franchises – Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Sunil Narine, Ken Williamson, Andre Russell, Sherfane Rutherford, Michael Marsh and Phil Salt – guarantee that SA20 Season 5 will be a showcase of both domestic stalwarts and international T20 powerhouses.
