Rybakina Pulls Out of Tokyo Event; Fernandez Reaches Semis

Elena Rybakina's run at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo came to an early end on Friday, opening the door for Canada's Leylah Fernandez to reach the semifinals. Rybakina withdrew from the WTA 500 tournament because of a neck injury.

In explaining her decision, Rybakina pointed to neck swelling and pain that had limited her ability to perform at a high level.

Her statement read: "I am sad to share that I have had to withdraw from my next match. Sadly, my neck is swollen and sore, and I cannot give my best. It was a very tough choice because I enjoy playing here and I always appreciate the fantastic backing from the crowd. I hope to be back next year. Thank you all for your patience and support."

Fernandez will now take on Russian lucky loser Kamilla Rakhimova in the semifinal, with a place in the final at stake. Rakhimova advanced by beating Australian qualifier Maya Joint in three sets, 7-5, 5-7, 6-1.

The withdrawal is a blow to the 2026 US Open champion, coming shortly after an important stretch. On Thursday, Rybakina beat compatriot Yulia Putintseva 6-2, 6-3 in 70 minutes, claiming the year-end No. 1 ranking for the first time in her career.

Her serving was particularly sharp in that win. She landed 75 percent of her first-serve points, won 57 percent behind her second serve, fired six aces, and did not drop her serve. She also saved the lone break point she faced in the final game.

Rybakina had finished the 2023 and 2024 seasons third and ended 2025 fifth. She climbed to the top of the rankings in 2026 and then won the US Open.
