Rural Talent Set to Shine as WAPL Gains Franchise Support

The launch of the Women’s Andhra Premier League (WAPL) on August 15 marks a turning point for women’s cricket in the state. Former captain Mithali Raj, who attended the event, said the league will give aspiring cricketers from villages a realistic pathway to professional sport.

Raj pointed out that the Andhra Cricket Association’s successful bid for the league and the acquisition of four franchise teams reflect a strong commitment to women’s cricket development. She noted that the association has, for the past two years, staffed all its women’s squads—including senior, U‑23, U‑19 and U‑15—with entirely female coaches and support personnel, a rare practice in Indian cricket.

The recent franchise auction, according to Raj, proves that there is commercial interest and financial viability in women’s cricket in Andhra Pradesh. As more business owners invest in the league, its reach and professionalism are expected to expand.

By establishing a competitive ecosystem, the WAPL will enable players from remote areas to aim higher, receive quality training, and compete at a higher standard. Raj believes the league will nurture talent that can eventually strengthen the national women’s side, just as the Women’s Premier League has done for India’s senior team.
