Coach Rob Walter explains O'Rourke's rehab and future role ahead of Australia
Rob Walter, head coach of the New Zealand cricket team, addressed the absence of fast bowler Will O'Rourke from the India series. Walter said O'Rourke is currently undergoing a structured rehab program for a left hamstring and calf strain, and the team will not risk his fitness ahead of the crucial Australia Test series in December‑January.
"It's disappointing to lose Will for a home series against India, but his long‑term health is paramount," Walter commented. He added that the fast‑bowling department will be stretched over the next few months, making O'Rourke's full recovery essential. Walter hopes the pacer will be match‑fit for the Plunket Shield games later in December and, if all goes well, be ready for the first Test in Perth on 9 December.
O'Rourke's recent injury saga includes a seven‑month lay‑off due to a stress fracture in his back, a comeback on Bangladesh's white‑ball tour, and a hamstring tear during the third Test against England. A calf strain in August training has further delayed his return. New Zealand will announce its final squad for the India series on Sunday.
