PV Sindhu Confirms BWF World Tour Finals Bid
Indian badminton icon P.V. Sindhu has successfully navigated the ranking criteria to earn a spot at the BWF World Tour Finals, a classification ratified by the sport’s governing body on Wednesday. The year-end spectacle will be hosted in Hangzhou, China, running from December 9 to 13.
Sindhu’s name appears on the confirmed list alongside an array of international contenders, including An Se-young, Akane Yagami, Wang Zhiyi, and Chen Yufei. The tournament operates on a strictly ranked basis, welcoming the top eight singles competitors and doubles pairs in years outside the Thomas Cup cycle. In the women’s category, six players have already secured their entries, featuring veterans and rising stars from Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, and Denmark.
This qualification holds special significance for Sindhu, as it represents her debut at the year-end finals since 2021. She had previously qualified in 2022 but was unable to compete due to a physical setback. Her credentials are further enhanced by her status as the exclusive Indian female champion in this tournament’s history, having claimed the title in 2018 against Nozomi Okuhara.
Momentum played a critical role in her selection, particularly following a dominant performance at the Hirol Open. Securing that championship injected 9,200 ranking points into her portfolio, elevating her to number six in the BWF’s most recent global standings. This recent gold marked her second victory of the campaign, swelling her all-time BWF World Tour title tally to seven.
Her preparation path included a grueling appearance in the French Open final, where she faced off against the world’s premier shuttler, South Korea’s An Se-young. Although An, currently holding the Olympic and World Championship gold, emerged victorious, Sindhu’s resilience throughout the season has been undeniable. This campaign marks her first since 2022 featuring multiple tour-level triumphs.
To ensure peak readiness for December, Sindhu has strategically scaled back her immediate schedule. She has withdrawn from the Korea Open and Japan Masters, a calculated decision aimed at facilitating thorough recovery and maintaining top-tier physical conditioning. As the qualification window for the remaining three women’s singles spots closes, Sindhu steps into Hangzhou with a proven track record and renewed focus.
