Post Kohli-Rohit Era: Klusener Sees Bright Future for India
New Delhi, October 26: Former South African all-rounder Lance Klusener has suggested that Indian cricket can move ahead with confidence as it prepares for life without Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. He backed Shubman Gill to lead the team for years to come and singled out Vaibhav Suryavanshi as a player who may become a future superstar.
Klusener said Indian cricket should not shy away from trusting its next generation. The stature of Kohli and Rohit is immense, he noted, but the sport has always found players capable of carrying forward the legacy of earlier champions.
Speaking at an event, Klusener, who is the head coach of Arabian Ace in the Abu Dhabi T10 League, said that great players eventually retire. He explained that cricket is a game that continues, and it can even become stronger with time. He pointed to the example of Sachin Tendulkar's records, which were once considered unbreakable but are now being challenged by current players.
He described the farewell of senior stars as a sad moment for their sport and country. Yet, he added, there are always younger, fitter and quicker players ready to take their place.
On Gill, Klusener said the young captain is a genuine superstar with the bat. He explained that Gill's next challenge is to keep his leadership responsibilities separate from his role as one of India's key batters. Klusener noted that the best captains have learned this lesson, and that Gill is likely to get many opportunities and assistance from teammates and support staff.
He also said that even seasoned captains have to keep learning, and Gill will be no different. Klusener expressed great enthusiasm for the young skipper and hoped he would represent India for many years with courage and a clear mission.
Gill's rise as a leader comes at a time when India is getting ready for the period after Kohli and Rohit. Both players took Indian cricket to new heights over more than ten years. Although their retirements will create a major void, Klusener believes this transition should be seen as a natural part of the game rather than a threat to India's competitive ability.
Using Suryavanshi as an example, Klusener said a new wave of Indian talent is already emerging. He argued that India does not need to look far when players like Suryavanshi are already in view. For Klusener, the young batter is the next superstar.
