Poonam Yadav’s path to international cricket was riddled with obstacles that forged her resilient character. Born in 1991 in Agra, she was drawn to the game while playing with boys in her neighbourhood, soon mastering a repertoire of flighted deliveries.

Her father’s consistent objections created an emotional hurdle; he would reprimand her for stepping onto the field. Still, the eight‑year‑old bravely walked into a stadium alone, practiced for hours, and returned with coach Hemlata Kala’s guidance to prove her determination.

Family relatives often mocked the idea of a girl pursuing cricket, yet Poonam’s domestic performances silenced the critics. Her selection for the Central Zone, followed by Uttar Pradesh’s senior team, highlighted a steady rise based on sheer skill.

International opportunities arrived in 2013 when she debuted in a T20I against Bangladesh and quickly secured an ODI berth. To date, she has taken 98 wickets in 72 T20Is and 80 wickets in 58 ODIs, also featuring in a lone Test against South Africa in 2014.
