Pollard Takes Charge as MI Head Coach After 16-Year Stint
Mumbai, October 24: Kieron Pollard, the former West Indies all-rounder, has been appointed head coach of Mumbai Indians (MI), the franchise confirmed on Saturday on its official social media page. The appointment elevates a figure who has been part of the club for 16 years.
From Player to Coach
Pollard joined Mumbai Indians in 2010 when he was 22 years old. Over the years he became one of the franchise's most influential figures, contributing significantly with both bat and ball to the team's five IPL championships.
He continued to play for MI until 2022. That season he retired from the league, and the franchise named him batting coach. He worked in that role for four seasons before the management decided to expand his responsibilities and appoint him head coach.
Words of Gratitude
Following his appointment, Pollard spoke of the significance of the role. “It is an honour to be the head coach of Mumbai Indians. MI has been a large part of my life and career, and my relationship with this team, its players and the Paltan means a lot to me. Having experienced this journey first as a player and then as a coach, I understand what the franchise represents and the responsibility of carrying the blue and gold. I am thankful to Nita Ambani, Akash Ambani and the whole MI family for their trust in me.”
He said he was excited to work with the players and support staff, build on the team's legacy, help nurture talent and provide the Paltan with more occasions to celebrate.
Leadership Endorsed
Nita Ambani, co-owner of Mumbai Indians, praised the decision. She said Pollard had grown into a vital part of the MI family across sixteen years, offering memorable performances as a player and sharing his insight, passion and understanding of the sport as a coach. She expressed her happiness at seeing him step into the head coach's role and said he understood what it takes to wear the MI jersey. “I am confident he will bring the same commitment, conviction and determination to this role,” she said, wishing him success as the team moves into its next chapter.
Statistical Excellence
Pollard is the second most successful batter in T20 cricket history. He has played 754 matches across international and league cricket, batting in 671 innings. He has remained not out 198 times and has scored 14,999 runs, including two centuries and 71 fifties. His strike rate has remained above 150, and he has taken 341 wickets. He continues to play in other leagues.
The Goal
As head coach, Pollard's principal objective is to deliver a sixth IPL title to Mumbai Indians. The franchise's most recent championship came in 2020.
