Pitch debate intensifies after India's 406‑run target vs West Indies

India's massive 406‑run target against West Indies sparked a fresh discussion about pitch fairness in modern one‑day internationals. Coach Sitanush Kotak lamented that Barabati's wickets were extremely flat, offering little in the way of movement or bounce for pacers and spinners alike.

He recalled the 1983 World Cup, when a 180‑run total after 60 overs was considered huge. "Today, even 400 runs feels insufficient," Kotak said, questioning whether the trend is driven by batting prowess or overly generous surfaces.

West Indies bowling coach Ravi Ramapol echoed these concerns, stating that flat pitches leave bowlers with limited options and that the team that scores the most runs typically wins. Both coaches warned that consistently easy wickets could give a false sense of security ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be contested on varied surfaces across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
