Philippine Star Ela Sets Wimbledon Record with Joint Upset

Wimbledon’s All England Club witnessed a breakthrough on July 2 when Alexandra Ela, representing the Philippines, defeated Maya Joint 3-6, 6-2, 6-0. The swift three‑set win, lasting less than 120 minutes, propelled Ela into the tournament’s third round – a first for any Filipino tennis player.

Ela’s resilience shone after surrendering the opening set. She claimed a pivotal break early in the final set and never relinquished control. The victory also avenged her 12‑10 loss to Joint in the Eastbourne final tie‑break last season.
