Perth Scorchers Hand Beth Mooney Captaincy for WBBL 12 Season
Perth Scorchers have appointed Beth Mooney as captain for the upcoming Women's Big Bash League season, WBBL 12. She replaces Sophie Devine, whose six-year reign as skipper has now come to an end.
Mooney's elevation is a reward for a run of consistently strong performances. She has become a key figure for the franchise and the wider league.
The 32-year-old is a three-time WBBL champion and was Player of the Series during Australia's 2026 ICC Women's T20 World Cup campaign. She has scored 3,024 runs in 80 matches for Perth, a club record. Earlier in her career, she won the title twice with the Brisbane Heat before going on to claim silverware with the Scorchers.
Mooney said the captaincy carries significant weight for her.
"Leading the Perth Scorchers in WBBL 12 is a moment I value deeply. Perth and the Scorchers feel like home to me. I have been fortunate to share the field with exceptional teammates and leaders, and together we have built a solid culture both on and off the field. We are proud to represent the state."
She was also full of praise for Devine.
"Sophie has done excellent work over the last six years, and I'm looking forward to learning from her throughout the season. We have a gifted squad hungry for success, and we are desperate to get out and produce quality cricket for our members and fans."
Devine's decision to give up the captaincy ends a six-year term that brought the Scorchers their first BBL title. The New Zealand all-rounder remains part of the team.
Head coach Becky Grundy supported Mooney's appointment, stressing her influence in the group and her ability to lead through both performance and preparation.
"Beth is an exceptional leader whose standards are a benchmark for everyone around her. Her experience at the highest level, her competitive edge and her professional attitude make her the right person to lead this group. Since arriving, she has been a driving force in our environment, and the way she prepares, performs and supports others has earned her tremendous respect. Sophie is a brilliant leader and our first champion captain, and we are grateful for her contribution as captain."
