Penalty Corners Define India-China Clash at Vagner Hockey Stadium

Penalty corners were the decisive factor in the opening women's Hockey World Cup match between India and China, held at Vagner Hockey Stadium in Mistelvin on 16 August. Both teams each converted two set‑piece opportunities, resulting in a 2-2 draw.

India's Navneet opened the scoring from an early penalty corner, only for China to equalise minutes later when a penalty stroke awarded after a foul on Shilpi Dabas was turned home by Zhang Ying.

Deepika restored India's lead with a well‑taken penalty corner in the 25th minute. A second Indian penalty corner in the 21st minute went unconverted, but Deepika quickly compensated with a fast break and a finish from the right side.

China's comeback was sparked by Ma Ning, who headed home from a penalty corner in the 39th minute. The remainder of the match saw disciplined defending, a red card for Chinese midfielder Joo Meirong in the 53rd minute, and ultimately a point each for the sides.
