Pat Cummins Admits Australia Need to Improve for No. 1 Return
Australia captain Pat Cummins has acknowledged that his side must improve if they hope to reclaim the top ranking in Test cricket. The comments came after Australia were beaten by 176 runs in the third Test in Cape Town, losing the series 2-1 to South Africa.
Cummins said the defeat was a difficult one to accept, particularly because Australia had dominated the early phases of the match. The three-day advantage they held was not enough to secure victory, and the side now faces questions about its direction.
In his post-match press conference, Cummins said that a series loss always invites discussion about team changes, and he believed that discussion was justified. He suggested the team might need to adjust its style of play and, in certain cases, make changes to the personnel.
“We are a very good side, but if we want to be number one again, we have to be a little better than we have been. Maybe the style needs to change, and maybe some players need to change. Give us a few weeks, and we will get on with working on that.”
The captain also said he had been looking forward to the tour for a long time, which made the outcome even more frustrating. He noted that he was not sure when Australia would next visit South Africa, and that several members of the touring party may have played their final Test there.
The result has far-reaching implications. Australia have lost the third Test series in their last five, and they have lost the top spot in the Test rankings for the first time since May 2024. They now sit third in the World Test Championship table.
The team's next assignment is a four-Test home series against New Zealand, which begins on December 9. Cummins and his selectors are expected to face important decisions as they look to rebuild momentum before that contest.
