Olise Brace Powers Bayern Past Magdeburg in German Cup Second Round

Michael Olise scored twice and created another goal as Bayern Munich beat Magdeburg 6-1 in the second round of the German Cup. The win, recorded on October 29, saw the Bundesliga champions overcome a spirited first-half display from their second-division opponents.

Bayern's Vincent Kompany was discharged from hospital recently but was not present for the match. Assistant coach Aaron Danks took charge of the team in his absence. Harry Kane was rested after winning the Ballon d'Or.

Bayern started strongly. Olise gave them the lead in the 10th minute after Lennart Karl's pass to Ismail Saibari was moved on to him. Magdeburg equalised five minutes later through Matheus Jukowski, whose shot took a deflection off Hiroki Ito and beat goalkeeper Jonas Urbig. Bayern responded in the 21st minute when Olise set up Saibari, who lifted the ball over Dominik Reimann.

Bayern had the bulk of the possession, but Magdeburg kept threatening on the counter. Atik hit the frame of the goal just before the interval, and Chavez could not capitalise on the rebound.

Danks introduced Alphonso Davies at half-time, and the change had an immediate effect. Nadjombe pulled Davies down in the penalty area, and Olise converted the resulting spot kick in the 50th minute.

Bayern gradually took complete control of the game. Reimann saved from Karl, but the holders scored three more goals late on. Substitute Alexander Pavlovic found Karl in the 70th minute, and Davies finished from close range after a pass from Karl. Three minutes later, Davies supplied Nathaniel Brown, who scored from inside the box. Santos Diber sealed the result with a powerful strike in stoppage time.

Brown said after the match, "We want to win every match, regardless of the opponent. We wanted to win this cup game. We played well and were worthy winners. Now our focus is entirely on Saturday's game."

Bayern's next fixture is a Bundesliga meeting with Borussia Dortmund. The round-of-16 draw for the German Cup will be held on November 1. Dynamo Dresden beat Schalke 2-0, Holstein Kiel won 4-3 on penalties against Hoffenheim, and Freiburg defeated Wolfsburg 3-2. Leverkusen thrashed Nurnberg 5-2, Stuttgart won 1-0 at Paderborn, Hertha Berlin beat Jahn Regensburg 2-0, and Kaiserslautern defeated Hannover 2-0.
