In a historic first for Indian athletics, Odisha has been chosen to host the 2028 World Athletics Indoor Championships, sparking celebrations across the nation. Cricket star Shikhar Dhawan was quick to celebrate the news, hailing it as a proud achievement that highlights India’s expanding influence in international sports.
Posting on X, Dhawan remarked, ‘India is progressing as a key platform for global sports events. Hosting the 2028 World Indoor Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar is a proud moment and a crucial step in our Olympic journey and sports ecosystem.’
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi called it a landmark victory for Odisha and India alike. ‘We are deeply grateful to World Athletics and the Athletics Federation of India for their confidence in us,’ he said. Majhi pointed out how sports have become integral to Odisha’s growth story over the last ten years.
‘Organizing this championship will strengthen our resolve to build a dynamic sports culture and motivate young athletes nationwide,’ Majhi added.
The announcement came at the 240th World Athletics Council meeting in Poland’s Torun, confirming the event for March 3-5, 2028, in Bhubaneswar. It’s a groundbreaking moment as India hosts its inaugural global track and field extravaganza.
Earlier inspections of the Kalinga Indoor Stadium left council members satisfied with the infrastructure. Odisha’s track record speaks volumes: from the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships to last year’s Continental Tour event with 200+ international athletes.
As preparations gear up, this event promises to elevate India’s profile in athletics, blending world-class facilities with passionate hosting to create unforgettable moments.
