In a decisive step to reclaim classrooms from digital distractions, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has prohibited mobile phones in all schools from March 1. The rule targets both public and private institutions, with hefty penalties for violations.
Unveiled during the finale of the Under-19 National Girls Handball Championship in Bilaspur’s Ghumarwin, the policy stipulates a Rs 500 penalty and phone seizure for any offending student. Sukhu, reflecting on his government school roots, highlighted how phones disrupt studies and peer interactions, particularly in downtime periods.
To bolster enforcement, parents must now compulsorily join counseling sessions at schools. This initiative underscores the administration’s pledge to deliver top-tier education, preparing students for international challenges.
Sukhu also unveiled sports incentives: Rs 20 lakh reward for the victorious state handball squad, employment for Asian Games participants, enhanced diet stipends (Rs 400 state-level, Rs 500 national), and airfare for long-distance travel beyond 200 km. These measures aim to nurture athletic talent alongside scholarly excellence.
As Himachal gears up for this tech-detox in education, the policy promises a sharper focus on learning and a stronger push for sporting glory, potentially setting a precedent for other states.
