New Entries Include Athletics, MMA and Surfing for Asian Games 2026

In a fresh announcement, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has incorporated eleven athletes into the Indian lineup for the 2026 Asian Games, raising the total delegation to 768 members. The contingent now consists of 503 competitors – 269 men and 234 women – backed by 246 officials, support staff and 19 administrative crew, set to battle in 36 sports.

The additions spotlight three disciplines making notable entries: athletics, mixed martial arts (MMA) and the new surfing competition. India’s surfing squad will feature Kishore Kumar, Shivraj, Kamali and Sugar Shanti as the sport makes its Asian Games debut. MMA, another first‑time event, will see Varun Sanyal representing the nation.

From a coaching perspective, the ministry confirmed that the heads of the newly formed "Centre of Excellence" will be appointed as chief coaches for the men's cricket side. Sunil Joshi, Rishikesh Kanitkar and Subhadip Ghosh Lakshman will join the technical team, while Amol Majumdar will lead the women's cricket group with the assistance of bowling coach Avishkar Salvi and fielding coach Munish Bali.

The expanded roster reflects India's strategic push to maximise medal opportunities across a wider array of events at the upcoming Games.
