Netherlands' O'Dowd Reprimanded by ICC for Questioning Umpire

Netherlands batter Max O'Dowd has been officially reprimanded by the ICC and given a demerit point after he expressed disagreement with an umpire's ruling in a League 2 match against Oman. The game was played in Dubai as part of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2.

The governing body found O'Dowd guilty of violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. He was specifically charged under Article 2.8, which covers dissent at an umpire's decision during an international match. Notably, this is his first disciplinary offence in the last 24 months.

The incident occurred during the 12th over of the Netherlands innings. O'Dowd was given out LBW and responded by holding up his bat, a move intended to tell the umpire that the ball had hit the edge. The ICC treated that action as a clear show of dissent.

O'Dowd admitted the offence and accepted the punishment decided by Phil Whitticase of the ICC International Panel of Match Referees. With the charge accepted, there was no formal hearing. The on-field umpires Akbar Ali and Shiju Sam, along with reserve umpire Virender Sharma, reported the matter.

Level 1 offences under the ICC Code of Conduct can result in a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum penalty of a fine amounting to 50 per cent of the player's match fee. Based on the nature and gravity of the breach, one or two demerit points may also be issued.

The disciplinary ruling came after the Netherlands recorded a 106-run win over Oman in the 141st match of the League 2 tournament at the ICC Academy Ground in Dubai. Both sides will meet again at the same venue on November 2, 2026, in the 144th match of the tournament. The Netherlands will be looking to build on their winning form, while Oman will be eager to turn things around.
