Cricbuzz reports that when Gambhir requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to consider Morkel for the position of bowling coach, some discussions were also held with Morkel. Gambhir-Morkel have previously worked together for Lucknow Super Giants for 2 years in the IPL. Gambhir was the mentor of that franchise, while Morkel was the bowling coach, which he still is.

Morne Morkel is a right-arm fast bowler. He played international cricket between 2006 and 2018. During this time, he has participated in 86 Tests, 117 ODIs and 44 T20 International matches for Africa.

Morkel also has experience as a bowling coach, he has been the bowling coach of the Pakistan cricket team. Morkel resigned from the post of bowling coach of the Pakistan team after the disappointing performance in the World Cup 2023. He joined the Pakistan team in June through a six-month contract.
