Mohun Bagan Super Giant moved to the top of the Indian Super League points table after beating Punjab FC 2-1 in their second fixture of the 2026-27 season. The match took place on Saturday at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan Stadium in Kolkata.
Punjab FC struck first through Alfred Planas in the third minute. Lee Irwin levelled the score, and Dejan Drazic scored the decisive goal just before half-time.
Punjab FC began brightly. In the third minute, Sanathoi Meetei fed Planas outside the penalty area, and the midfielder drilled a powerful right-footed shot. Vishal Kaith dived across but could not keep the ball out, and the visitors were ahead.
Mohun Bagan responded quickly. In the sixth minute, Sameer Jelkovic attempted a long-range shot that flew wide of the goal. Two minutes later, Mangalenthang Kipgen threatened again for Punjab FC, but Kaith smothered his effort from outside the box.
A blow came for Mohun Bagan in the 12th minute, when Sahal Abdul Samad was injured and replaced by Anirudh Thapa. The home side kept pushing, and in the 18th minute they found the equaliser. Thapa set up Irwin on the left side of the box, and the striker lashed a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner.
There were chances at both ends during the first half. In the 22nd minute, Rahul Bheke's header from a Drazic corner came close to putting Mohun Bagan ahead but drifted just outside the post. Planas also had a chance for Punjab FC, but his shot from outside the box was blocked.
The decisive moment arrived in the 42nd minute. Irwin passed to Drazic outside the penalty area, and the midfielder struck a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner. That goal gave the hosts a 2-1 lead.
Arshdeep Singh made important saves to deny Jelkovic and Irwin, keeping Punjab FC in the game. Nevertheless, Mohun Bagan went into the break in front.
Punjab FC aimed for an equaliser after the restart, while Panos Dilmperis's side looked to extend their advantage. Thapa went close with a long-range effort in the 49th minute, and Deepak Tangri's shot after a corner in the 62nd minute also missed the target.
The visitors kept searching for a way back. Planas tested Kaith from the centre of the box in the 75th minute, and the goalkeeper saved it. Arshdeep stopped a shot from Irwin, and substitute Liston Colaco also challenged the Punjab goalkeeper.
In the final stages, Mohun Bagan pressed again. Tangri's effort from outside the box in the 87th minute narrowly missed. Punjab FC continued to push for a leveller, but Dilmperis's side held their nerve through eight minutes of injury time to win 2-1 and collect all three points.
