Modi Meets Young Australian Cricketers, Highlights Future of Bilateral Sports Partnership

In a vibrant gathering at Melbourne’s Cricket Ground, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spent time with a select group of Australia’s rising cricket stars. The meeting, which also drew former captain Steve Waugh, was a key moment in the launch of the India‑Australia sports collaboration roadmap.

The young athletes were visibly thrilled, lining up for autographs and a collective photograph with the Indian premier. Modi praised their vigor, observing that the enthusiasm on display resembled a talent‑identification camp rather than a mere exhibition.

He remarked that sport has always been a natural conduit for friendship between the two nations, citing a previous visit to a stadium in Ahmedabad where the same cricketing spirit was felt. Modi underscored that to forge champions, a blend of skill, attitude and perseverance is essential.

The roadmap extends beyond the boundary rope. It envisions joint programmes in kabaddi, Australian football, sports technology, and scientific research, seeking to create a holistic ecosystem for athletes.

Modi also highlighted India’s inclusive sports policies, which give children from remote villages a platform to dream big through initiatives like ‘Khelo India’. With both countries eyeing the 2036 and 2032 Olympic Games respectively, the partnership is positioned to deliver shared expertise and infrastructure.

The prime minister concluded by wishing Australia’s women cricketers success and promising to develop world‑class sports infrastructure that will serve upcoming global events, including a Big Bash League match scheduled for Chennai.
