Minister Mandevia Announces $3.76 Billion Investment for Sports Ecosystem

During the BRICS Traditional and Indigenous Sports 2026 opening in Ahmedabad, Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya revealed a landmark financial commitment of approximately $3.76 billion under the "Play India" programme.

The investment is earmarked for a comprehensive 360‑degree approach that includes grassroots participation, talent identification, coaching education, sports science research, facility upgrades, athlete welfare and international exposure.

Mandaviya explained that this funding will cement a sustainable sports ecosystem capable of delivering Olympic medals and fostering a culture of physical activity nationwide.

He linked the funding to the broader "Fit India" movement, which has galvanized more than five million citizens through campaigns such as "Sunday on Cycle," where over 500,000 cyclists gather weekly across 94 events.

The minister also outlined three practical collaboration areas for BRICS partners: creating a voluntary repository of traditional games, promoting exchanges among players, coaches and scholars, and incorporating indigenous disciplines into future BRICS sport festivals.
