Meghalaya’s Football Culture Celebrated as Trophy Tour Arrives
The arrival of the Durand Cup trophy caravan turned Shillong’s streets into a celebration of Meghalaya’s deep‑rooted football culture. The minister’s flag‑off ceremony featured a showcase of the cup’s historic moments, a video from the President’s unveiling ceremony, and a melodic performance by local artists. The three trophies – the Durand Cup, President’s Cup and Shimla Trophy – were paraded past landmarks such as Camel Back Road, Civil Hospital, Umshiri Bridge, Shillong Peak and Nongthymmai, before ending at the state’s dedicated football fan park. The purpose of the tour is to bring the legacy of the competition closer to fans, generate buzz ahead of the tournament, and reaffirm that football remains an integral part of Meghalaya’s social fabric and pride.
