Mainz Stunned 4-1 at Elversberg as Hosts Rise to Fifth
Berlin, October 31: Elversberg rose to fifth in the Bundesliga after a 4-1 victory over Mainz, a result that leaves the visitors searching for answers.
The hosts took control early. Mwene lost possession near his penalty area in the seventh minute, allowing Kiedel to score past goalkeeper Robin Zentner.
Elversberg doubled their lead in the 26th minute. Mokwa's run and pass allowed Onika to beat Paul Nebel and score his first Bundesliga goal.
Mainz created little in the first half. Petkov's 40th-minute shot went wide. Shortly before halftime, Kiedel's corner caused problems for Zentner, who could not clear it. Krettenmacher then slotted home from close range, giving Elversberg a 3-0 lead at the break.
Fischer made four changes in the 63rd minute, bringing on Hollerbach, Widmer, Koenigsdoerffer and Maloney. Koenigsdoerffer scored three minutes later, but the goal was disallowed after a video review found him offside.
Zentner denied Mokwa in a one-on-one chance, ensuring Elversberg could not add to their tally at that stage.
Campbell added a late fourth goal in stoppage time for the hosts. Hollerbach scored Mainz's first goal in the closing moments.
The visitors suffered another blow when Posch was sent off after receiving a second yellow card. He will be unavailable for the next league game.
Mainz sporting director Nico Bungert voiced his disappointment. "Our performance was very disappointing," he said. "We worked hard to make a good start to the season, but our performances in the last two games have been very poor."
With this win, Elversberg have collected 13 points from eight matches. Mainz have 10 points and sit eighth.
