Madson Sets Sights on Promotion as 2027 Red‑Ball Season Approaches

With a fresh contract in hand, Wen Madson has turned his focus to Derbyshire’s promotion ambitions for the 2027 red‑ball season. The seasoned Italian opener, who has been part of the club since 2009, will continue to captain the side after leading them in the 2025 and 2026 campaigns.

Madson’s career tally for Derbyshire exceeds 24,000 runs and includes 52 centuries, achievements that earned him a place among the county’s all‑time great batsmen. After ending his T20 career with a final blast against Leicestershire Foxes, he now dedicates his full effort to the longer format.

Speaking to the media, Madson expressed pride in entering his 19th season with Derbyshire and reaffirmed his commitment to the club’s supporters. He noted that the new deal offers stability for his family, enabling a split residence between the UK and South Africa.

Head of Cricket Mick Arthur praised Madson’s leadership, recalling two centuries in the recent summer that demonstrated his continuing class. Arthur added that while Madson knows his career is nearing its final chapters, his determination to give everything for Derbyshire remains undiminished.
