Kyrgios Faces 28‑Day Social Media Hiatus After Drug Ban

Following confirmation of benzoylecgonine in a June 22 sample, the International Tennis Integrity Agency imposed a temporary suspension on Nick Kyrgios that started on 4 August. The test, conducted at the Mallorca ATP 250 event, was processed by a WADA‑approved lab which identified the cocaine metabolite on 17 July. Cocaine is categorized as a stimulant and a prohibited substance under the World Anti‑Doping Agency’s list, and while out‑of‑competition positives carry a lighter sanction, a provisional ban is still mandatory.

During the suspension period, Kyrgios is barred from competing in any ATP, WTA, Grand Slam, or national federation‑sanctioned tournaments, and he cannot serve as a coach or take part in official tennis activities. The 31‑year‑old has not submitted an appeal against the ITIA’s ruling. In a candid Instagram message, Kyrgios accepted responsibility, apologized to his fan base, sponsors and especially to the children who admire him, and outlined how a succession of injuries over recent years have left him both physically and mentally exhausted. He announced a 28‑day withdrawal from social media and public engagements, urging the media and public to respect his privacy and that of his family.

Kyrgios has featured in only four singles matches this year, battling persistent knee and wrist problems. His most recent court appearance was a first‑round men’s doubles loss at Wimbledon, where he and Alexander Bublik were eliminated. Among his career achievements are seven ATP singles titles, a runner‑up finish at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships against Novak Djokovic, and a 2022 Australian Open men’s doubles title with Thanasi Kokkinakis.
