Kohli and Gill Steer India to Series Lead Against New Zealand

India capitalized on a pivotal Virat Kohli half-century to overcome New Zealand by five wickets in the first ODI at Eden Park, Auckland. The win establishes a 1-0 advantage for Team India in the five-match series.

New Zealand, elected to bat first, posted a competitive total of 185 runs in 40.2 overs. Tim Seifert led the charge with 38, followed by Glenn Phillips (30), Daryl Mitchell (28), and Blair Tickner (34). Jacob Duffy remained unbeaten on 15. The Kiwi batting lineup suffered a severe crisis, shedding nine wickets for 146 runs. Tickner and Duffy managed to salvage the total with a 39-run alliance for the final wicket.

The Indian bowling department showcased varied strengths. Arshdeep Singh secured four wickets for 70 runs across ten overs. Gurnoor Brar took three wickets in 9.2 overs, allowing 44 runs. Anshul Kamboj delivered an exceptionally tight spell, claiming two wickets for just 22 runs in ten overs, including two maidens.

In response, India suffered an early blow as Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a duck. Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli then orchestrated a crucial 113-run partnership for the second wicket. Gill fell for 37 off 51 balls at 114/2. Kohli played a masterful innings, scoring 74 off 51 deliveries with 13 fours and a six, before his dismissal at 124/3.

The middle order encountered challenges, with Akshar Patel making zero and Shreyas Iyer scoring 15 off 13 balls before falling at 136/5. However, Rahul (3 not out) and Naman Dhir (5 not out) navigated the final overs successfully. Following two rain interruptions that invoked the DLS formula to set a target of 143 runs in 32 overs, India achieved the goal in 22.4 overs. Jacob Duffy took three wickets for the visitors, with Kyle Jamieson and Nathan Smith taking one each.
