As the IPL 2026 mini-auction looms, Kolkata Knight Riders CEO Venky Mysore has shed light on the decision to release Venkatesh Iyer. The all-rounder, bought for a massive INR 23.75 crore in the 2025 mega-auction, is now back in the auction pool after a disappointing season. Despite his struggles last year, Iyer remains a highly sought-after Indian all-rounder. With a base price of INR 2 crore, he is one of the few Indian players in this bracket, making him a prime target for teams needing a top-order batter and a bowling option. The mini-auction, scheduled for December 16 in Abu Dhabi, will see 1,355 players vying for 77 available slots across all franchises. Iyer’s situation highlights the intense competition expected for top talent.
Iyer’s IPL 2025 campaign was below par, with just 142 runs from 11 matches and minimal impact with the ball. This led KKR, who had invested heavily in him as a key Indian all-rounder, to make the tough call. Mysore acknowledged the pressure associated with high price tags, suggesting it might have affected Iyer’s performance. He indicated that the franchise prioritizes flexibility and strategic team building over being constrained by large player contracts. The decision to release Iyer, according to Mysore, was driven by the dynamics of the mini-auction and a desire for strategic maneuvering, rather than a lack of faith in Iyer’s abilities.
