Kimi Antonelli: Austin Pole Brings Big Opportunity

Kimi Antonelli has said that the United States Grand Prix will not be straightforward, even after a surprise pole position in Austin. The Mercedes driver expects Red Bull to push hard in Sunday's race.

In qualifying, Antonelli finished 0.179 seconds ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen in the Q3 session. The performance has opened the door to a major achievement. A victory in Austin would give the 20-year-old Italian his first Formula 1 title and make him the youngest champion in the sport's history.

The challenge is considerable. Red Bull and Ferrari are both expected to fight for the win in Austin. Verstappen and teammate Isack Hadjar start behind the championship leader, which makes the race a key test for Antonelli's composure and pace.

After qualifying, Antonelli shared his reaction. “I am very happy. It was a good qualifying. The clean run helped create momentum. We made no mistakes, and I am really pleased with that. The car felt good, especially in Q3. The wind made it difficult because the balance was changing at every corner, but the last lap felt good. I pushed a little more and lost out, which was disappointing. I am happy with the result and I am looking forward to tomorrow.”

Antonelli also acknowledged the difficulty of the race ahead. “We will try to win. I hope we start well from the grid, set a good pace and take the victory, but it will not be easy. Red Bull and Max have been very strong. Isack has also been good in qualifying. It will not be easy there. We are ready to give our best.”

The weekend could bring Antonelli several records. Winning in Austin would be his first F1 title and could break the record Sebastian Vettel set as the youngest champion. For that to happen, Antonelli must win, teammate George Russell must finish ninth or lower, and Lewis Hamilton must stay outside the top four.

If those conditions are met, a win in Austin would secure the Formula 1 2026 title with five races still remaining after the US Grand Prix.
