The magic of winter sports descends on Gulmarg as the 6th Khelo India Winter Games begins today. Nestled in Jammu and Kashmir’s breathtaking landscape, this four-day event from February 23-26 draws top talent from across the nation.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha will inaugurate the competition, attended by 400 athletes representing 30 states and UTs. Perfect snow conditions have heightened expectations for record-breaking performances.
‘We’ve got 400 registered participants, and with Gulmarg’s pristine snow, this edition will be a hit,’ shared Nuzhat Gul, Secretary, J&K Sports Council. Building on the first leg in Leh (January 20-26), Gulmarg now hosts the second phase of these prestigious Games.
All previous editions have spotlighted the region, emphasizing its role in India’s winter sports ecosystem. Four medal categories – ski mountaineering, alpine skiing (most popular), Nordic skiing, and snowboarding – will keep spectators glued.
Haryana led the Leh standings with four golds in ice skating, trailed by Ladakh, Maharashtra, and Telangana. The snow leopard mascot ‘Shaan’ symbolizes the grit needed for these high-altitude pursuits, while government officials meticulously review logistics.
Beyond competition, the Games promote Himalayan traditions nationally, inspiring youth and elevating India’s presence in global winter arenas.
