From Kapurthala to Cricket Legend: The Legacy of Lala Amarnath

Lala Amarnath entered the world on September 11, 1911, in the town of Kapurthala, Punjab. His early fascination with cricket turned into a rare all‑round skill set – a right‑hand bat, a right‑arm fast bowler, and occasional wicket‑keeping duties.

He earned his first Test cap in 1933 against England at the age of 22. Over the next nineteen years he featured in 24 Tests, batting in 40 innings to compile 878 runs, with a personal best of 118. He also recorded one century and four fifties. With the ball he tallied 45 wickets, capturing five wickets in an innings twice.

The landmark moment in his career arrived on December 17, 1933, when he notched 118 against England – the inaugural Test century for an Indian player. After independence, Amarnath was appointed captain of the national side, steering India to its first series win. The 1952 five‑match series against Pakistan ended 2‑1 in India’s favour, after which he retired from active competition. He later managed the 1954‑55 Indian tour of Pakistan.

His sons carried the cricketing torch. Surinder Amarnath represented India in ten Tests and three ODIs, while Mohinder Amarnath played 69 Tests and 85 ODIs, playing a decisive role in the 1983 World Cup victory. Lala Amarnath passed away in New Delhi on August 5, 2000, at the age of 88.
