New Delhi – In a thrilling conclusion to the Kanijsa Open 2026 in Nagykároly, Hungary, Indian Grandmaster Pranesh M. emerged victorious, taking first place after a decisive ninth round.

The tournament, known for its rigorous competition among Europe’s elite open players, witnessed Pranesh delivering a standout performance. On the final day he faced seasoned competitor Vadim Petrovsky, scoring seven points from nine games and edging his rival in the tie‑breaker to claim the gold.

Pranesh’s success underscores the growing strength of Indian chess internationally and adds to Hungary’s legacy of hosting world‑class chess events.

Born in Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu on 26 August 2006, Pranesh earned his Grandmaster title in January 2023, becoming the 79th Indian to do so. His career highlights include an International Master norm at the Delhi GM Open (2020), a challenger‑section win at the Chennai Grand Masters (2025), and a victory at the Riltón Cup in Stockholm (2023).
