Injury Concerns, Not Refusal, Behind Alzarri Joseph’s Test Absence

Alzarri Joseph, the West Indian pacer, has been absent from the current Test series against Pakistan. While head coach Darren Sammy suggested Joseph voluntarily stepped away, Joseph clarified during a televised interview that his prolonged absence stems from recurring stress fractures in his lower back. After undergoing extensive rehabilitation for more than a year, he felt incapable of meeting the physical demands of Test cricket. Joseph confirmed that both the coach and West Indies Cricket officials were aware of his condition, and the board’s public note mentioned “private reasons.” He stressed that his loyalty lies with the West Indies side, not any individual coach, and he will return when medically cleared.
