Joël Veltman pens contract with West Ham United, eyes Premier League return

West Ham United announced a one‑year contract, with an optional second year, for veteran Dutch defender Joël Veltman. The move comes as the club looks to rebuild after its recent drop from the Premier League and target an immediate promotion.

The 34‑year‑old has amassed more than 450 senior appearances, most notably with Ajax and Brighton & Hove Albion. His record includes over 50 European matches, 165 Premier League outings, and captaincy roles at both clubs. Internationally, Veltman has been capped 28 times for the Netherlands, helping the side reach the 2014 World Cup semi‑finals and taking part in Euro 2020.

Veltman said, “I’m delighted with this contract and eager to begin. The project at West Ham excites me, and I believe the club belongs in the Premier League. I bring my experience, a winning attitude, and leadership – I was captain at Ajax – and I look forward to contributing to the team and connecting with the fans.”

Recruitment Director Nils Koepen and head coach Nuno Espírito Santo praised Veltman’s blend of on‑field talent and off‑field professionalism, expecting him to enhance squad unity. West Ham’s next match is a Carabao Cup first‑round fixture against Portsmouth at the London Stadium on Saturday, after which the side will start its EFL Championship season with promotion as the primary objective.
