From Youth Olympic Champion to Injury Setbacks: Jeremy's Story

New Delhi, October 25: Jeremy Lalrinunga's journey in Indian weightlifting has been marked by early success, remarkable achievements, and a difficult period of injuries. Once hailed as the sport's next big star, he now faces the challenge of rebuilding his career.

Jeremy Lalrinunga was born on October 26, 2002, in Aizawl, Mizoram. His father, a well-known boxer, could not pursue the sport professionally due to weak financial circumstances. Jeremy first wanted to enter boxing, but a growing interest in weightlifting, sparked by his friends' training sessions, changed his direction. With his father's full support, he took part in the Army Sports selection trials, passed them, and moved to Pune to train.

His early international results were striking. At 13, he won silver in the 56 kg category at the 2016 Junior World Weightlifting Championship. He then claimed silver at the Asian Junior Championship, which earned him a spot in the national camp. The following year, he won gold at the Commonwealth Youth and Junior Championships. In 2018, he took gold at the Buenos Aires Youth Olympics and became the first Indian weightlifter to win a Youth Olympic gold.

The pandemic years brought new difficulties. In 2021, Jeremy had surgery to remove a lump from behind his knee. In December 2021, he returned to form with gold at the Commonwealth Championship. In February 2022, a spinal injury during training once again interrupted his progress. Nevertheless, he qualified for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and won gold in the 67 kg category at the age of 19.

That success spread his fame far beyond India, and he was seen as the future of the sport. Expectations grew that he could one day deliver a medal at the Olympics. However, the last few years have been especially hard for him. Injuries have deeply affected his career and blocked his path forward.

Jeremy has come back from injury before, and his history offers reason for optimism. As he is set to turn 24, the country is once again hoping to see one of its most talented weightlifters make a strong return.
