How the IOC’s New Selection Handbook Shapes the Race for 2036 Games

The International Olympic Committee has released a comprehensive handbook that maps out the entire selection journey for the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The document outlines a four‑stage process that begins with interested parties submitting their intent, followed by virtual presentations to the Future Host Commission in November 2026. By March 2027, the IOC Executive Board will have shortlisted the most viable projects and will commence strategic dialogues to assess technical and strategic dimensions, including venue master‑plans, athlete experience, funding models, and public support. The evaluation will continue through December 2028, when targeted dialogues with preferred candidates will begin. The final host city will be chosen at the IOC Session in 2029, after all shortlisted nations have responded to a detailed questionnaire and provided full guarantees. India, along with six other nations, is currently under review.
