India’s weightlifting star Mirabai Chanu shares journey to third Commonwealth gold
After returning from Glasgow, Mirabai Chanu met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the official residence. The PM congratulated her on securing a third straight Commonwealth gold in the 48‑kg category.
Chanu’s emotional podium moment sparked a heartfelt conversation. “Every tear felt like another gold droplet,” Modi observed.
She recounted how she had been just one kilogram short of a medal at the Paris Olympics, a fact that added to the intensity of her feelings.
The athlete also spoke about the relentless injuries and personal struggles that marked the past four years, noting that seeing the national flag fly elevated her emotions.
India’s overall performance at the Games was impressive, with 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze medals across disciplines.
