India’s innings ends at 460/9 as rain disrupts Galle Test

GALLE, 16 August — By the end of the second day, India had compiled 460 runs for nine wickets in the first Test against Sri Lanka, a total built despite a rain‑marred start to the day.

The first session of Day Two was abandoned because of persistent showers. When play resumed, India batted for 21 overs in the second session, scoring 76 runs and losing three wickets. The third session saw another 22 overs, yielding 96 runs and four wickets.

Having won the toss, India chose to bat. The opening stand of Yashasvi Jaiswal and K.L. Rahul produced 47 runs before Jaiswal was dismissed for 32. Devdutt Padikkal then emerged as the mainstay, forging a 162‑run partnership with Rahul, who ended on 82.

Captain Shubman Gill contributed 16 runs before being dismissed. Padikkal later joined wicket‑keeper Rishabh Pant for a 71‑run partnership, which pushed the score past the 300‑run threshold. Pant added 39 runs, with five boundaries, before a run‑out.

Padikkal’s next partnership was with Dhruv Jurel, adding 38 runs. Padikkal ended with 167 runs from 230 balls, including one six and fifteen fours, narrowly missing his maiden Test double century.

Manoj Suthar and Jurel added a further 55 runs; Jurel scored 51 off 68 balls before his wicket fell, while Suthar contributed 24 runs. Kuldip Yadav (12*) and Prasoon Krishna (1*) were unbeaten at stumps.

Sri Lanka’s bowlers saw Prabath Jayasuriya claim four scalps, Keshara Nuwandha three, and Asitha Fernando one.
