Indian star Harleen Deol targets free‑flowing cricket in WCPL
Harleen Deol has been confirmed as a new member of the Barbados Tridents squad for the concluding stages of the Women’s Caribbean Premier League. This addition makes her the fifth Indian player to feature in the Caribbean franchise circuit and puts her alongside compatriots Pooja Vastrakar and Kiran Navgire.
In a recent virtual dialogue arranged by the tournament’s broadcaster, Harleen shared that she landed in Barbados only a couple of days ago and that the opportunity arrived unexpectedly. “It was a sudden call, and that’s why I’m so excited,” she said, adding that the environment feels unique compared to Indian conditions. She has already taken part in a practice drill and a team‑bonding cruise, which she described as “a wonderful experience.”
The franchise’s management, represented by Shashank Sir, directly approached her with a straightforward proposal: “Would you like to play in the WCPL?” Harleen did not hesitate and accepted, curious about the new pitches, fans and the overall franchise culture.
Her goal for the league is uncomplicated. “I just want to play without any pressure and enjoy cricket,” Harleen explained. She emphasized that her focus remains on delivering her best performance, irrespective of the venue, and that enjoyment of the sport outweighs all other concerns.
Before the upcoming match against Jamaica Empress, Harleen admitted that she will truly gauge the Caribbean conditions only after playing on the surface. The encounter is set for Saturday, and she anticipates learning a lot from that experience.
Discussing the advantages of T20 franchise exposure, Harleen noted that playing with unfamiliar teammates broadens a player’s perspective. Even seasoned domestic players acquire fresh insights when they share the field with international talent. She described playing for a foreign franchise as a “significant challenge” that forces a player out of their comfort zone.
Regarding technical adjustments, Harleen clarified that franchise cricket does not compel her to make major modifications to her game. Instead, she watches others, absorbs useful techniques, and integrates them where appropriate. “I haven’t overhauled my skills; I simply learn from others and apply what fits my style.”
She also spoke about staying grounded amid the unpredictable rhythm of T20 cricket. Harleen prefers to focus on the present, taking each day as it comes and avoiding excessive speculation about future outcomes. “I live in the moment, enjoy each match, and keep my aim clear – to play good cricket.”
