Silver for men, bronze for women: India's stellar Chess Olympiad results
New Delhi, September 28 – The Indian chess contingent delivered an impressive performance at the 46th Chess Olympiad 2026, bringing home a silver medal in the open section and a bronze in the women’s event.
In the open division, India held Hungary to a 2‑2 draw in the final round, clinching the second spot on tie‑breaks. Uzbekistan topped the table with a 2.5‑1.5 victory over Ukraine, while Germany rounded out the podium by beating the Netherlands.
The women’s team matched Georgia 2‑2, ensuring a third‑place finish. Savitha Shri’s solid draw against Meri Arabidze was a key factor that helped India outpace rivals such as the United States, Poland, Armenia and Mongolia in the tie‑break.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the squads on his X account, highlighting their dedication and suggesting that their success will inspire a new generation of chess enthusiasts across the nation.
