India Shine on Opening Day of 46th International Tamer Boxing

Indian boxers delivered a commanding opening day at the 46th International Tamer Boxing Tournament in Tampere, Finland, with four athletes advancing to the semifinals after winning their first-round contests.

The tournament began on Friday, marking the start of a competition that has long been regarded as an important stop on the international boxing circuit. Indian athletes entered the event with confidence and produced disciplined performances across several weight classes.

Arundhati Chaudhary, a Commonwealth Games gold medallist, competed at 70 kg and defeated Finland's Vilma Kusiko, giving India a strong beginning. In the 54 kg category, Aarti Dhariyal registered a powerful victory over Sweden's Brita Liia Tissel. Ankushita Boro, fighting at 65 kg, recorded a win over Brazil's Hejial Santos to qualify for the semifinals.

In the men's 60 kg section, Husam Uddin Mohammed impressed with his technical skill in defeating Scotland's Luka Flynn, securing his semifinal spot.

According to the schedule, the event is being held in Tampere between October 28 and November 2. The competition phase itself is set to take place from October 30 to November 1, with preliminary rounds on the first day, semifinal bouts on October 31 and the final contests on November 1.

A 14-member Indian boxing contingent is participating, with Jasmine, a Commonwealth Games gold medallist, and Arundhati Chaudhary highlighted as key figures. The tournament is designed to offer Indian boxers international exposure, including contests against top Olympic weight-category boxers and athletes from weight classes outside the Asian Games programme.

Held annually since 1977 and organised by the Tampere Boxing Association, the event is now an established part of the international boxing calendar. It features 10 elite men's categories and seven elite women's categories and follows World Boxing rules.

The Indian men's squad includes Pawan Barwal (55 kg), Husam Uddin Mohammed (60 kg), Vivek Meena (65 kg), Hitesh (70 kg), Akshay (80 kg), Bobin Chauhan (90 kg) and Chetan Chaudhary (90+ kg). The women's squad includes Tanu (51 kg), Aarti Dhariyal (54 kg), Jasmine (57 kg), Disha Vijay Patil (60 kg), Ankushita Boro (65 kg), Arundhati Chaudhary (70 kg) and Imroz Khan (75 kg).
