During the Independence Day keynote, Modi outlined India’s dual sporting vision. The country is set to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030, a move that will showcase India’s infrastructural readiness and organisational capability. Simultaneously, the prime minister announced a strategic push to become a serious bidder for the 2036 Olympic Games.
He noted that the Olympics now feature around 40 sports with 325‑350 events, and India currently participates in only two‑thirds of them. By expanding the talent pool and strengthening coaching ecosystems, the government hopes to qualify in a broader range of disciplines, thereby improving its medal prospects and bidding credibility.
