India's Padikkal scores 167 as rain delays second day in Galle

The first Test at Galle saw India’s young opener Devdutt Padikkal compile a commanding 167, anchoring the innings after a modest start from captain Shubman Gill (16) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (32).

His 230‑ball effort, packed with 15 boundaries and a six, made him the third Indian to score 150+ against Sri Lanka, following the exploits of Rahul Dravid and Cheteshwar Pujara.

Padikkal’s partnership of 71 runs with Rishabh Pant (39) set the platform for a later stand with KL Rahul, who, after a brief retire‑hurt, added 82 runs to the tally.

The second day began under overcast skies, and persistent rain forced a delayed start. The lingering moisture on the wicket gave Sri Lankan bowlers some assistance, yet Padikkal’s technique kept the scoreboard ticking.
