Packed Stadiums Expected for India's ODI Series in New Zealand
New Delhi, October 23: The Indian cricket team is touring New Zealand for a busy schedule that includes five T20Is, five ODIs and two Tests. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are set to feature in the one-day series, adding to the buzz among New Zealand cricket followers.
Former New Zealand assistant coach and ex-fielding coach of Mumbai Indians James Pamment has said that the fascination with Rohit and Virat is very strong. That, he believes, is the main reason fans are so eager for the ODI leg of the tour.
In an exclusive chat, Pamment compared conditions in New Zealand with those in South Africa, noting strong similarities. He said venues such as Durban, Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha) and Newlands are quite close to New Zealand conditions. He expects these kinds of grounds to be part of the five-match ODI series for the Indian side.
Pamment observed that cricket lovers in New Zealand and around the world may be seeing Rohit and Virat in New Zealand for the last time. He called this an incredible prospect and forecast full houses for the ODI matches. According to him, the appeal of world-class players of their calibre is a powerful draw.
He was curious to see how New Zealand's young players would take on such experienced stars. Pamment added that the home team has played excellent one-day cricket in its own country in the recent past.
He described the series as very important for New Zealand Cricket, both on and off the field. He said hosting India for 12 matches would be financially rewarding. Recalling the 7 million dollar loss suffered by the board last year, he said the tour could strengthen its finances. He also expressed hope that tickets for every game would be sold out.
Pamment also pointed to the sizeable Indian community living in New Zealand. He expects many of them to come to the stadiums to support their cricket heroes, which could result in record crowds at the matches.
