India Dominates Asian Para Games Javelin, Record 114 Medals Achieved
India produced a remarkable day at the Asian Para Games in Nagoya, with javelin thrower Sumit Antil leading the way. The Paralympic and world champion retained his Asian Para Games title in the men's javelin throw (F42-F44/F61-F64) event on Friday, winning gold with a throw of 72.46 metres at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletics Stadium.
Antil's gold was part of a complete Indian podium. Mahendra Gurjar (F42) took silver with a best throw of 59.03 metres, earning 1066 Raja points, while Sandeep Sargar (F44) secured bronze with 64.48 metres and 1006 Raja points. Both athletes also broke Games records in their categories.
The Raja points system is used to fairly compare athletes across different types of impairment by converting their performances onto a single ranking scale.
In the men's club throw (F51) final, Pranav Surma won gold with a Games record of 32.87 metres. Dharambir took bronze with 27.71 metres. Amit Kumar Saroha finished fifth with 27.26 metres, which meant India just missed out on a clean sweep of the podium.
India's overall performance at the Games has been its strongest yet. The country has now won 114 medals, beating the 111 it collected at the Hangzhou Para Games 2023. The medal count includes 30 gold, 35 silver and 49 bronze, with the gold tally already exceeding the 29 won at the previous Asian Para Games.
Sandeep also won bronze in the men's 100 metres T64 event, finishing in 11.67 seconds, following his earlier 400 metres T64 gold.
The para badminton women's doubles pair of Thulasimathi Murugesan and Manasi Joshi added another gold, winning the SL3-SU5 final against China's current world champions Qiuxia Yang and Zuxian Jiao in straight games, 21-16 and 21-13. The result settled a score from the Asian Championships 2025 final, where the Indian pair had lost.
Earlier that day, Thulasimathi had partnered Nitesh Kumar to win silver in the mixed doubles SL3-SU5 event.
