India’s Devdutt Padikkal Scores Maiden Test Hundred as Rain Puzzles Galle

The Galle International Stadium has been unable to start the second day of the Test match between India and Sri Lanka because of lingering rain. The first day was limited to 73 overs, and the rain finally eased at roughly 10:12 a.m. Indian time, but the covering on the ground retained too much water for immediate play. No definitive restart time has been communicated.

India’s captain Shubman Gill chose to bat after winning the toss. The opening pair KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal added 47 runs before the first wicket fell. Jaiswal was dismissed for 32, and Rahul later retired hurt on 77 after a long innings that featured nine fours and a six from 162 balls. Gill contributed 16 runs before being dismissed. The middle order saw Rishabh Pant and Devdutt Padikkal at the crease. Padikkal, on debut, reached his first Test century, scoring 131 off 178 deliveries with twelve fours and a six. Pant held his end with 27 runs off 36 balls.
