India cruises to 288/2 despite rain delays in Galle Test

Galle International Stadium witnessed a rain‑interrupted first day of the India‑Sri Lanka Test on August 15. Winning the toss, India elected to bat and survived 73 overs before the weather intervened.

Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul provided a steady start, putting together 47 runs in the opening 11 overs. Jaiswal was dismissed for 32, while Rahul added 77 before a muscle cramp forced him to retire hurt. He left the field after a valiant effort that featured one six and nine fours.

Captain Shubman Gill entered at number four and contributed 16 runs with two boundaries before being dismissed. The team reached 239 runs with two wickets down when rain halted play.

After the pause, Devdutt Paddikal and wicket‑keeper Rishabh Pant forged an unbeaten 52‑run partnership, taking the total past 300. Paddikal remains unbeaten on 131, having struck a six and twelve fours. Pant added 27 runs.

For Sri Lanka, Prabath Jayasuriya was the only notable performer, picking up a wicket and scoring 77 runs in 24 overs. India finished the day in a strong position, ready to build on the platform once the weather clears.
