Hockey India banks on five veterans for Pakistan showdown

On August 19, New Delhi reported that the men's hockey clash between India and Pakistan at the 2026 FIHR World Cup will be held on Wednesday at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands. Captain Harmanpreet Singh is set to lead a side that aims to recreate the 4‑1 triumph over Pakistan recorded in 2010.

The two rivals have met 183 times in total, with India winning 82 encounters and Pakistan 69. India has not tasted defeat against Pakistan for ten straight years, the last setback coming in 2016.

The Indian management has highlighted five players who could become Pakistan’s biggest headache. Drag‑flicker and captain Harmanpreet Singh already has two goals in the current tournament and holds India’s record for most goals against Pakistan since 2013. Forward Mandeep Singh is among the top Indian scorers against Pakistan and excels at creating goal‑scoring opportunities. Midfielder Manpreet Singh, the most‑capped Indian player, is considered the backbone of the team and can influence matches with his experience. Defender Zugaraj Singh, praised for his technique, is a penalty‑corner specialist who has previously turned games with crucial goals. Lastly, midfielder Hardik Singh, known for his speed, flawless stick work, and sharp understanding of the game, can strengthen the defence while also posing a goal threat.

With these five key figures, Hockey India hopes to maintain its dominance and secure another victory over Pakistan at the World Cup.
